A little bit about our Founder Member, Wendy Wilson.
In November 2015 Wendy completed her routine bowel cancer screening test that comes through the post every 2 years for anyone over 60 years of age. She was contacted by post a week later and asked if she could submit a second test. Wendy hadn’t had any unusual symptoms, so wasn’t concerned about the retest.
On Christmas Eve 2015, Wendy went to Treliske Hospital in Truro, Cornwall, for a colonoscopy, expecting a routine procedure and a cup of coffee. Then those words, "You have cancer." When Claire Ferris, the colorectal nurse specialist said, "You knew, didn't you?" all she could say was "Yes." She didn't. It was a shock to her that, suddenly, she could be facing oblivion a lot sooner than she expected. The trip home in the car was silent.
On 12th January 2016 Wendy’s journey continued. Surgery and chemotherapy came and went in a blur of hospital stays and appointments, then she met Keith Anderson, another bowel cancer patient. They hit it off straight away and soon realised they both felt that after treatment they had been abandoned and left to pick up the pieces of their lives on their own. There was no support in the Plymouth area. That is how the Plymouth & District Bowel Cancer Support Group was born.
After months of hard work and planning, the first meeting of the group was in September 2017. Just 2 months later Keith’s cancer had spread and sadly, on the 8th of November 2017 Keith passed away. Wendy was now left with the responsibility of running the group on her own, but she was determined to make a success of it. She knew that there were hundreds of people out there going through their bowel cancer journeys alone.
Plymouth & District Bowel Cancer Support Group have gone from strength to strength, with monthly meetings at the Invicta Hotel (boasting a regular attendance of 20-25 people), day trips, and the annual Christmas Party and prize draw.
Wendy said “I don’t want anyone to ever feel they are alone during their journey. My aim is and always has been to provide care and support for anyone touched by bowel cancer. I will never turn anyone away from the group”
At present the group have over 125 members. Wendy also runs the very active closed Facebook group.
